Digital vs NFC business cards: what's the difference?

The difference in a digital business card vs NFC setup is simple: the digital business card is the live profile, and an NFC card is one way to share it with a tap. Most NFC cards are digital business cards with a physical tap card attached.

You can also share that same profile with a QR code, a link, or an Apple Wallet pass. The card is optional. The profile is the thing people save.

Two different things

Digital business card

A page with your name, title, phone, email, and links. It opens in a phone browser. You edit it when something changes, and the next person sees the new version.

NFC business card

A physical card with a passive chip. Hold a phone a few centimetres away and the chip shares a web address. The NFC Forum sets the standard for that short-range tap. The chip has no battery and does not store your contact list.

When to use which

  • Lead with the profile

You mostly meet on video, or you send a follow-up by email. A link in the signature is enough. Basic is free.

  • Add the NFC card

You stand in a room and hand something over. A tap takes about 2.8 seconds. The other person does not type your number.

  • QR when a tap fails

Some phones have NFC turned off. A card that also prints a QR code still opens the profile with the camera.

  • Paper for a pocket

Paper is the cheapest per card and needs no phone. It is already wrong the day your title changes.

What the other person sees

A tap or a scan opens the profile in their browser. They can save the contact. On Basic, exchanged contact lets them send their details back. Nothing is installed on either phone.

The chip only shares the address of that page. It does not read their phone, and it does not hold your phone number inside the card. Edit the profile and the next tap shows the new title, number, or link.

The physical card and the live page

A physical vs digital business card choice is usually framed as one or the other. The physical piece is PVC, bamboo, walnut, or metal. The digital page is the profile behind it. You can use the page with no card at all.

NFC vs digital business cards is the same split. NFC is the radio tap, a few centimetres, with no battery in the card. The digital card is what loads after the tap. Paper is the third option: no chip, no live page, and a reprint when the number changes.

Why most people use all three

One profile. Three ways to open it, depending on the room.

  1. NFC card. Hold their phone to the card. The chip shares the profile address. On a metal card, the phone can tap anywhere on the card.
  2. QR code. Every Innovnet card prints one. You can also download the QR image from the dashboard and drop it in a slide or a signature.
  3. Apple Wallet pass. Basic includes a pass that shows the same QR code, so you can share from the lock screen without the physical card.

Paper, digital, and NFC

A short cut. The longer comparison is on the paper page.

How Innovnet does it

The profile and the hardware are separate purchases. The hardware is once. The profile can stay free.

  • Free profile

Basic is $0 CAD. It includes real-time updates, exchanged contact, basic visitor insights, and Apple Wallet. English and French.

  • Paid plan

PRO is $9.99 CAD a month, or $99.99 CAD a year. Paid plans sync contacts to Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, Pipedrive, Zapier, and Google Contacts.

  • Card materials

PVC is CA$29.99. Bamboo and walnut are CA$39.99. Metal starts at CA$69.99 and goes to CA$189.99. Tags and keychains are CA$19.99.

  • Shipping

Orders ship from Hamilton, Ontario. Canada delivery is 5–9 business days. Shipping is $10 CAD anywhere in Canada. No customs or duties on Canadian orders.

If a paid plan ends, the account moves back to Basic, so the profile and the printed QR code keep working. Cards and the free profile, shipped from Ontario.

Common questions

Is an NFC card the same as a digital business card?

No. The digital business card is the live profile. The NFC card is the physical card that opens it with a tap. On Innovnet they ship together: every card has a chip and a printed QR code, and both open the same profile.

Do I need NFC?

No. A link, a QR code, or the Apple Wallet pass shares the same profile. NFC is the in-person tap. If a phone cannot tap, the QR code on the card still works.

What if their phone has no NFC?

They scan the QR code printed on the card. It opens the same profile in the phone’s browser. Nothing needs to be installed on either phone.

Which is cheaper?

The profile is free on Basic, at $0 CAD. An NFC card is a one-time purchase from CA$29.99 for PVC. A paper card is cheaper per piece, and it cannot update itself when your details change.

Can I use both?

Yes. The usual setup is an NFC card, the QR code printed on it, and an Apple Wallet pass that shows the same QR code. All three open one profile.
