What is a digital business card?
A digital business card is a live profile on your phone with your name, title, contact details, and links, shared by tap, QR code, or link. The other person opens it in their browser, saves you as a contact, and can send their details back.
Because the profile lives online, you can change it whenever you like. The card you handed out last year shows today’s number and title.
Other names for the same thing
You will see a few terms used almost interchangeably. They all describe contact details that a phone can open and save.
Electronic business card
An older name for the same idea: your details in a format a phone can save.
Virtual business card
Often used for the link or QR code alone, with no physical card.
Smart business card
Usually the physical version: a card with an NFC chip that opens your profile on a tap.
How the exchange works
Four steps, and the other person only needs their phone.
1. Tap or scan
They hold their phone near your NFC card or point the camera at your QR code. An Innovnet tap takes about 2.8 seconds.
2. Your profile opens
It loads in their phone’s browser. Nothing to download, on iPhone or Android.
3. They save you
Your name, number, email, and links go into their contacts, spelled correctly.
4. They share back
Exchanged contact lets them send their details to you, so the connection runs both ways.
On a paid plan, the contacts people send back can flow into your CRM, so a hallway conversation becomes a lead you can follow up.
The three types of digital business card
All three open the same kind of profile. The difference is what you carry and how the other person reaches it.
| Type | How you share it | Innovnet price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital only: link or QR code | Send a link, add it to your email signature, or show a QR code on screen | Free on Basic, $0 CAD | Video calls, email, and people who rarely meet face to face |
| NFC smart card | Tap it on a phone, or let them scan the QR code printed on it | CA$29.99 to CA$189.99, once, in PVC, bamboo, walnut, or metal | Meetings, events, and anyone who still hands out cards |
| NFC tag or wallet pass | Tap a tag or keychain, or show the QR code on your Apple Wallet pass | Tags and keychains CA$19.99; Apple Wallet pass on Basic | Keeping your card on you without carrying a card |
Every Innovnet card carries both an NFC chip and a printed QR code, so it works with phones that tap and phones that only scan.
How QR code business cards workWhat goes on the profile
Start with what a paper card holds, then add what paper cannot.
- Name, photo, title, and company
- Phone, email, and website
- Social and portfolio links
- A booking link for meetings
- A Google review link, for local businesses
- English and French versions, if you need both
Where a tap-to-share card earns its keep
Anywhere you would hand out a paper card, plus a few places you cannot.
Conferences and trade shows
Share with a tap in a busy line, and let people send their details back before they walk away.
Client meetings
Hand over a card that opens your booking link, so the next meeting is set before you leave the room.
Open houses and storefronts
Put the QR code where visitors can scan it from their own phone.
Email and video calls
Add your link to your signature or show the QR code on screen. No card needed.
How it compares with a paper card
Never out of date
A new phone number or title is an edit, not a reprint.
Nothing to retype
The contact lands in their phone as you wrote it, with no typos from a squinted-at card.
Where paper still wins
It is cheapest per card and works for someone without a smartphone.
Setting one up
You can try a digital card before you buy a physical one. Innovnet Basic is free and includes real-time updates, exchanged contact, basic visitor insights, and Apple Wallet.
1. Create a free profile
Sign up for Basic at $0 CAD and add your name, photo, title, and contact details.
2. Add your links
Website, LinkedIn, booking page, and anything else you would point a new contact to.
3. Share it right away
Copy your link, download your QR code from the dashboard, or add the pass to Apple Wallet.
4. Add a card when it pays
Order an NFC card in PVC, bamboo, walnut, or metal. It opens the same profile, so nothing changes.
Common questions
Does the other person need an app?
No. A tap or a scan opens your profile in their phone’s browser, and they can save your contact from there. Nothing needs to be installed on either phone.
Does a digital business card work on iPhone?
Yes. Recent iPhones read an NFC card when it touches the top of the phone, and any iPhone camera can scan the QR code that is printed on every Innovnet card.
What happens if I change jobs?
Edit your profile and the change is live right away for anyone who taps your card or opens your link. If your old company’s name is printed on the card itself, you may want a new card, but the profile behind it carries over.
What if my phone dies?
An NFC card does not need your phone. The chip has no battery; the other person’s phone powers it and opens your profile. The printed QR code works the same way.
What if I lose the card?
Your profile and saved contacts live in your account, not on the card, so you lose nothing but the plastic, wood, or metal. Order a replacement from CA$29.99. Whoever finds the card sees only what your public profile shows.
Is a digital business card private?
Your profile shows only what you choose to add, and you can edit or remove any detail at any time. Innovnet hosts customer data in Canada. People share their details back only if they choose to.
Is it worth it compared to paper cards?
If you meet people often or your details change, usually yes. One card from CA$29.99 replaces reprints, and the Basic plan is free. Paper is still the cheapest per card and needs no phone at all.
